‘The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson’ welcomed the famous movie star, Clint Eastwood. The gritty action star of ‘Dirty Harry’ was an interesting guest for Johnny in 1973.
Johnny says, “I’m sorry Ed isn’t here tonight for one reason because we’ve had a running battle going for many years about the relative intelligence of the pig and the horse.”
Johnny suggests that Clint has been on many horses, so maybe he can help decide. Clint says, “Well, the observations I’ve heard from farmers, the pig is more intelligent. But I don’t, I don’t know. I’ve never talked to either one too much.”
Clint settles on what he’s heard, choosing the pig as the more intelligent animal, and Johnny agrees. Later, Johnny asks if it’s true that Clint had an argument with a horse.
Clint explains how he had arguments with a horse, but he never hit the horse. He says, “It’s always one way. I’ve been doing the transmitting, and they’ve been doing the receiving.”
They talk about Clint’s new film and how it is slightly violent. They detail all his other films that contain violence, and Johnny suggests that Clint enjoys the violence.
Clint first achieved success in the Western TV series ‘Rawhide.’ He went on to star in his own series of Spaghetti Westerns during the ‘60s and as antihero cop Harry Callahan in five ‘Dirty Harry’ films. His tough guy persona is a part of him, even during Johnny’s interview.
