America’s Most Popular Home Styles: Find Out if Your Home is on the List

There are many diverse American home styles available for home shoppers today. These different architectural wonders are all steeped in history and include some of the most desirable features homeowners are looking for.

The ‘Ranch’ or ‘Rancher’ got its start in the U.S., featuring a close-to-the-ground profile and a wide-open layout. Ranch homes have become more elaborate in design over the years, including cathedral ceilings and sunken living rooms. The ‘American Craftsman’ was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, and it received its name from furniture creator Gustav Stickley’s magazine title. The small to medium-sized houses were also known as ‘California Bungalows.’

‘American Colonial Architecture’ included building styles inspired by the colonial period in America. These houses were designed to look like houses, churches, and government buildings from the 1600s through the 19th century.

The classic ‘Cape Cod’ house consisted of single and double-story frame buildings with a gabled roof. The large chimney added charm to this cozy home featuring multipaned windows. The symmetrical design was purposeful to withstand stormy Cape Cod weather.

The ‘Tudor’ was designed to emulate Medieval architecture in England during the Tudor period from 1485-1603. The homes featured the Late Gothic Perpendicular style and even borrowed elements from Elizabethan architecture.

The ‘Log Cabin’ is typically less finished and not as sophisticated in its structure. The homes were meant to mimic the original settlers’ style of first-generation home building. The ‘Greek Revival’ style brought in many aspects of ancient Greek architecture. It flourished in the late 18th and 19th centuries in Northern Europe, the United States, and Canada. The Greek temple was also an inspiration for this classic home style.

The ‘French Country Style’ home was a byproduct of the scenic villages in the south of France, and it became one of the most popular styles in the world. It incorporates the style to make the interior of a home look like a tiny village with ornate decor. The montage of most desirable home styles also features Mediterranean, modern, cottage, farmhouse, mid-century, townhomes, and Southern architecture homes.
